Some people call storage facility home
There's no place like United
BY JONATHAN SHUGARTS REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN

WATERBURY — Self-storage has a whole new meaning at the United Storage building on Bank Street. The facility seemingly has become home to a number of local residents.

A Republican-American reporter recently spent a night watching the front entrance of United Storage from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m. the next day. With the exception of about five minutes at roughly 2:30 a.m., the entrance was under surveillance.

Starting at about 9:30 p.m., people started to arrive at the building on foot. They walked up, punched in a numerical code for the front door and disappeared into the building. They did not reappear before morning.

Funny you post this today....as I noticed this morning in our log that someone at 2.00 am tried by using the k-pad to enter our facility. He got denied as it was an incorrect number and was outside our gate hrs.
Our facility always shut down at 10.00 pm with the gate.
Looking at the camera's we saw 5 min after he tried 3 squad cars blocking our gate LOL
I have not found out what happenend yet.

Just found out that as we are neighboring a big gas station it apparently was a homeless person who was playing with our k-pad and the police cornered and questioned him on the spot. Good job of the guys in uniform I would say.

I'm sure that there is some law against letting people live in self storage units right? It's like glorified squatter housing. If people can afford the rent of storage units, then why not a proper room in an apartment?

Almost all states have laws on the books stating that self storage is for property only and can never be used as a residence.

A substantial fee for being onsite after facility close would help to eliminate that issue there.

We have gotten quite a few new tenants from other facilities lately because of people living in storage units at other facilities. Each time it was a facility ran by 1 person normally a young female who out of fear is unable to deal with the situation.

It seems the owner's of those facilities are more concerned about the short term bottom line.

READING, PA
Reading police obtained an arrest warrant on Friday for a city teenager wanted in the Sept. 27 shooting at the North Reading Storage complex on North Ninth Street.

The suspect, Santiago Castro-Correa, 15, of the 900 block of Franklin Street, is charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, illegal possession of a firearm and related counts.
Castro-Correa had not been apprehended as of Friday. No one else has been charged in the crime.

According to Reading police, security video obtained from the self-storage facility showed six males approaching a storage unit, where four people were inside about 10:30 p.m. Sept. 27. A gunman came around the side and opened fire under the partially closed overhead door.
Two people were shot that night, including the 28-year-old woman who rented the unit and had been using it as her residence for a few weeks, police said. The woman was shot in the leg as she slept.
A male victim told police he played dead for awhile after suffering a graze wound to the neck, investigators said. Another occupant fled to a nearby fire station, where he flagged down police officers.
According to the court documents:
A witness heard a conversation between the six males at Ninth and Perry streets about going to the storage units to talk to someone. They entered the facility through the vehicle gate and made their way to a storage unit that was halfway open with a light on inside.
Castro-Correa turned on the laser for his handgun, walked to the unit, squatted and started to fire.
The man who was shot in the neck refused treatment. The female victim was taken to Reading Hospital, where she was admitted for a leg wound.
